Paludarium, 2015

This painting is based on a paludarium I saw at the Denver Botanic Gardens. A paludarium is a type of vivarium that incorporates both terrestrial and aquatic elements. Paludaria usually consist of an enclosed container in which organisms specific to the biome being simulated are kept. One of the more interesting things about paludaria is their connection to the Victorian-era Pteridomania or Fern-Fever; a craze for ferns. Victorian decorative arts presented the fern motif in pottery, glass, metal, textiles, wood, printed paper, and sculpture, with ferns “appearing on everything from christening presents to gravestones and memorials.” (wiki
